Prime Minister of Romania, Mr. Adrian Nastase and the German Chancellor, Mr. Gerhard Schroder held a series of official talks in Berlin on Wednesday, 4th of July 2001. The discussions focused on the stage of bilateral relations at all levels and on various aspects of international policy.

The German Chancellor underlined the important economic progress achieved by Romania, creating the premises for a special development of bilateral connections and, at the same time, for the acceleration of Romania's joining the European Union.

'Germany will support Romania's will to become a member of the European Union and now, the prospects are much more favourable, both due to the political will and to the progress recorded in the area of internal reform' pointed out Chancellor Schroder.

Prime Minister Adrian Nastase appreciated as 'important' and 'extremely useful' the discussion with his German counterpart. 'We are dealing with a true strategic economic partnership. During the last few weeks we have managed to overcome a series of very delicate issues and I believe that, at this moment, our cooperation pledges our responsibility', declared the Romanian Prime Minister.

The two leaders have favoured the idea of a special German support for Romania in issues of vital interest for our country, among which eliminating mandatory visas for Romanian citizens travelling within the Schengen area (by the end of this year), boosting economic links and acknowledging the role played by Romania as a pillar of stability within the Balkan area.
