EBRD Secretary General to visit Bucharest for Annual Meeting planning

Antonio Mario Costa, secretary General of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), travels to Bucharest in mid-September to sign a formal agreement with Prime Minister Adrian Nastase regarding the organization of the May 2002 Annual Meeting of the EBRD Board of Governors.

In 1997, the Romanian Government had offered to host the Annual Meeting in Bucharest at the Palace of Parliament, and a decision was taken the following year. The Meeting will be jointly organized by the Bank and the Government of Romania. For this purpose, a Supervisory Committee has been set up, chaired by the Prime Minister. Mr. Tanasescu, Minister of Public Finance, who is the Governor for Romania of the EBRD, will be in charge of the Meeting's operational aspects. A logistics team has been set up and will be functioning shortly.

The Annual Meeting (which will be attended around 3,000 participants) serves as an opportunity for the Bank Governors to convene, and for the members of the international and business community to meet during the associated Business Forum. The Business Forum includes a series of seminars and debated relevant to current issues - including the investment climate - in the region.

For further details about Mr. Costa's trip to Bucharest will be announced closer to the time of the visit.
