BRITISH PRIME MINISTER WELCOMES PRIVATISATION OF SIDEX, REAFFIRMS BRITISH SUPPORT FOR ROMANIA'S MEMBERSHIP OF THE EUROPEAN UNION

The British Prime Minister Tony Blair has warmly welcomed the agreement signed between the Romanian Ministry of Privatisation and the British-based businessman, Lakshmi N Mittal.

The agreement sees the privatization of Sidex, the largest steel company in Romania, by Mr Mittal's LNM Group, the fourth largest steel producer in the world.

In his letter to the Romanian Prime Minister, Adrian Nastase, Tony Blair said that the privatisation would set Romania even more firmly on the road to membership of the European Union, an objective of which the British Government remains a staunch supporter.
