PRESS RELEASE

On Wednesday, 31st of August 2001, Prime Minister Adrian Năstase met with Senator Richard Lugar, member of the US Senate.

During the meeting, the two officials reviewed common interest issues between Romania and the United States, and discussed the latest international evolutions.

Both parties agreed on the necessity to widen NATO, from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea. According to Premier Nastase it is important that the NATO expansion be achieved taking into account the strengthening of the southern flank of the Alliance, keeping in mind Romania's possible role in the Balkan area. The Head of the Romanian Executive has expressed his satisfaction towards the constant interest and support granted by Senator Lugar to the Romanian efforts for NATO integration.

Both parties have commended the results obtained by the Strategic Partnership between the two countries, boosting Romania's efforts to reevaluate, expand and diversify the cooperation projects portfolio with the American administration. In this connection, Romania has displayed its availability to render American investments more dynamic and to strengthen collaboration in sectors like agriculture, energy and information technology.

Senator Luger has emphasized the ample process of modernization undergone by the Romania society, within which an essential role is played by the economic, politic, social and cultural reform. The Romanian Government considers that, as Romania enjoys internal political stability, the success of the reform process greatly depends on the promoting of good relations with all of Romania's neighbours, and on the existence of the security and stability environment both throughout the region and within the Euro-Atlantic area.
