The Ministry of National Defence was shocked and worried at the terrible news and images of the unprecedented terrorist attacks launched on September 11, against U.S. national, civil, official and military targets.

Our traditional relations with the U.S. Armed Forces, expanded in the recent years through a strategic partnership, through the PfP and the MIL-TO-MIL Programs, the numerous multinational exercises, peace support operations and exchanges of experience with the joint participation of Romanian and U.S. military, fostered strong professional and personal connections. At the moment when the tragedy occurred, 38 Romanian military were present, alongside their American comrades, at courses and missions on the U.S.A. territory. This is one additional reason for which the Romanian military are so deeply touched by the tragedy that struck the Pentagon yesterday, all the more so when among the victims there could be American military with whom true friendship relations might have been made during the joint missions.

We are aware that the tragedy experienced by the American military and their families cannot be expressed, or wiped out by words.

Yet, as comrades and human beings, the MoD military and civil personnel are expressing their deep sympathy for the hundreds of victims made by the attack against the Pentagon, their solidarity with the mourning families.
