STATEMENT

Statement of Mr. Adrian Nastase, Prime-minister of Romania and of Mr. Tom Lantos, congressman - Washington, 31st October 2001

Tom Lantos
I am pleased to hear of the progress Romania is making along so many lines, and I assured the Prime Minister I would like to be of help in any way I can.

Adrian Nastase
I am very pleased to have met Mr. Tom Lantos once more; we could say that he is an old friend of mine. We have crossed many stages together, come of them extremely complicated. We all have learnt a lot during this transition period. Mr. Lantos is a true friend of ours, he represents with distinction the interests of a rather complicated area here, in the United States.

It also gave me great pleasure to discuss some of the issues we are confronted to, current topics, inclusively the Law of the Statute of Hungarian living in neighboring countries.

Question: What is your view on the Law of the Statute of Hungarian living in neighboring countries?

Tom Lantos
I do not think it helps. I think that the move towards a new Europe is extremely important to be forward looking and open and I expressed that to the distinguished Prime Minister. Thank You.
